The Association of Village Council Presidents (AVCP) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit tribal consortium of fifty-six federally recognized tribes. Tucked away between two of Southwest Alaska’s major rivers in an area the size of the State of New York, the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta is the traditional home of the Yup’ik, Cup’ik, and Athabascan people. AVCP is a fast-paced environment, where we value innovative thinking, team-work, and our traditional Yup’ik and Cup’ik values.

The Associate General Counsel is responsible for typical in-house counsel duties, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts; advising departments in the areas of human resource management, compliance, and risk management; and maintaining and updating corporate governance records. The Associate General Counsel’s duties also include providing advice and legal analysis to a wide range of social services departments (from child welfare to transportation); helping to ensure federal and state grant compliance; and researching and engaging the foremost native law issues (from lands into trust to subsistence rights). Opportunities for travel throughout the region by air, water, or ice are available.

Applicants must be admitted to practice law in Alaska, or able to become admitted to practice law in Alaska within one (1) year of hire. Three (3) years of experience in corporate, non-profit, or Native law preferred. Cold weather tolerance or substantial winter gear strongly recommended.

AVCP offers a competitive salary; generous benefits package and retirement plan; and relocation reimbursement. To apply, send cover letter and résumé to Joy Anderson, janderson@avcp.org.

Per Public Law 93-638 (Indian Self Determination & Education Assistance Act) qualified American Indians/Alaska Natives are given preference, but candidates from all backgrounds are welcome to apply.
