Program Purpose:

To develop and provide the technical expertise necessary for Native people in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta region, to protect their cultural and environmental heritage.

Program Description:

  1. Ensures that all realty transactions comply with federal cultural preservation law, including the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), the Natives Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA)
  2. Coordinates compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
  3. Administers the ANCSA 14 (h)(1) Historic and Cemetery Sites Program in cooperation with Calista Corporation
  4. Provides technical and logistical assistance to tribal environmental programs with funding provided through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Indian General Assistance (IGAP)

Eligibility Requirements:

  • AVCP Compacted Realty Tribal members who own federally restricted property
  • The ANCSA 14 (h)(1) program evaluates historic sites within the Calista Corporation service area

Additional Information:

Archaeological and environmental technical products prepared for the Department of Realty are based on realty caseload. To meet the goals of the ANCSA 14 (h)(1) program, we work with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) ANCSA Office and Calista Corporation to investigate and document approximately 1,000 historic and prehistoric sites on behalf of Calista Corporation.

All federally recognized tribes within the Yukon-Kuskokwim region, are eligible for technical assistance through the environmental program. Each tribe may apply independently for EPA IGAP grants.
