Meet Nadia (left) and Adriana (right)! They are doing research on public safety in Alaska.
Nadia was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. Her parents are Carol Jacobs (originally from New York) and Henry Sussman (from Philadelphia). She has one older sister and two nephews. Nadia wants to help people tell their stories in their own words and cares deeply about hearing from people who don’t always speak up.
This year so far, she has been able to visit Anchorage, Fairbanks, Kotzebue and the villages of Kiana and Hughes, while reporting for this project.
Adriana was born in central Mexico and migrated to the Chicagoland area with parents, Gerardo and Cecilia, as a child. She has a younger brother and a nephew. She studied journalism, and has worked in radio and education. Today, she teaches journalism at a local university, her reporting at ProPublica focuses on including community perspectives and resources in their coverage.
She’s had the luck to report in Wainwright, Barrow, Kotzebue, and Anchorage.
They are inviting you to call them and talk about your experiences. People from Anchorage and Fairbanks have called to talk with them, but we know that’s just half the story.
The conversation with Nadia and Adriana can be just you and them or they invite you to call with a friend, so you can all talk together. They want you to bring whoever makes you feel comfortable to the phone. Nadia’s cell phone number is 347-791-8256.
Nadia says, “We are absolutely serious about people’s privacy. We son’t voluntarily publish any personal information that people share without their explicit permission. Our system is secure. We also have a guide with additional options for contacting us including through encrypted apps like signal and WhatsApp. I am reachable on both of those apps with my cell phone number: 347-791-8256.
