AVCP Delegation Continues Engagement at ICC General Assembly with Focus on Indigenous Rights and Arctic Cooperation
IQALUIT, NUNAVUT, CANADA (July 23, 2026) — Representatives from the Association of Village Council Presidents (AVCP) continued participation in the 15th Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) General Assembly on Thursday, joining Inuit leaders from across the Arctic for a full day of discussions focused on Indigenous rights, international cooperation, and shared priorities throughout Inuit Nunaat.
The second day of the General Assembly opened with an invocation delivered by Freda Jimmie of the Yukon-Kuskokwim region. Following the opening prayer, Jimmie was joined by fellow Yukon-Kuskokwim delegates and observers in a special Yup’ik song, offering a warm cultural welcome to delegates gathered from Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and Chukotka.
Delegates also received a report summarizing the ICC’s work over the past four years, along with an overview of the ICC Alaska Inuit Arctic Strategy, which outlines priorities and goals for Alaska Inuit communities in addressing issues affecting the circumpolar North.
